"Make your own mini MIDI synth with DSP-G1 Voice Chip analog modeling synthesizer by Jan Ostman at DSP Synthesizers. It's a tiny LPC810 chip programmed to read in MIDI streams and make music!

The chip reads TTL level serial MIDI data and outputs sound through a 44.1KHz Delta-Sigma DAC. The synth is a 15-DCO structured as 5-note paraphonic with a 24db lowpass filter with resonance. It also has: AMP ENV, filter ENV and LFO with sine or sample & hold waveform.

If you want to use it with for example Arduino (as we did in our example photo), it can be connected to the ATmega TX port and controlled through a sketch. More chips makes it multitimbral

Mini OONTZ - 3D Printed MIDI Controller From x0xb0x Creator Adafruit

Published on Jul 31, 2014 Adafruit Industries

"In this project we're building a diy midi controller that works with ios devices and analog synths.

Say hello to OONTZ, the open source button grid controller based on the adafruit trellis.

The mini OONTZ is a 3d printed case housing one trellis and 4 potentiometers ideal for a 16 button drum pad.

OONTZ works with any MIDI software and hardware. No more virtual midi or serial to MIDI stuff, oontz is legit USB MIDI.

Say hello to OONTZ, the open source button grid controller based on the Adafruit Trellis button platform.

Adafruit Trellis
This PCB is specially made to match the Adafruit 4x4 elastomer keypad. Each Trellis PCB has 4x4 pads and 4x4 matching spots for 3mm LEDs. The circuitry on-board handles the background key-presses and LED lighting for the 4x4 tile. However, it does not have any microcontroller or other 'brains' - an Arduino (or similar microcontroller) is required to control the Trellis to read the keypress data and let it know when to light up LEDs as desired."

x0xb0x has all the I/O you could ever need:
* MIDI in, out, and thru
* DIN Sync (in or out, selectable)
* CV and Gate (1/8" jacks)
* Audio: headphone, mix-in and line-level out (1/4" jacks)
* USB for computer interface & control
DC Jack, Headphone, CV, Gate, USB, Mix-in, MIDI jacks, Line out, DIN Sync
Extras

xoxbox added a couple extra modes to make the x0xb0x more fun than the rest:
* Random mode: fill a pattern bank with random notes, or have it just play random notes
* Keyboard mode: just like those casios you had as a kid. Press the keys and sound comes out!
* Rotary encoder tempo knob: for finer control over the tempo, or you can set the tempo via computer control mode
* Firmware upgradable: the C code is written for AVR-gcc, any Mac/Linux/Windows computer can be used to recompile new code for the x0xb0x. Reprogram using the x0xb0x software with USB. Mess something up? You can always revert back to the original firmware.

Make: Shorts - Limor Fried: Adafruit Industries

YouTube via makemagazine | December 07, 2010 |
Limor Fried aka Ladyada is the woman that brought us the x0xb0x (see this interview). See was also featured on Wired news (see this post). No synth talk in this new video but the influence on synth DIY is inherent, and of course gives us some insight to the person that created the x0xb0x.

"Limor Fried is the founder and engineer behind Adafruit Industries which makes electronics kits that teach soldering, tinkering, and technology exploration. One of their projects, the Tweet-a-Watt, is a wireless modification to a common off-the-shelf home energy monitor, the Kill-a-Watt. The Tweet-a-Watt not only monitors your energy consumption, it sends the information to Twitter so you can track it online, which reveals usage trends over time. Besides selling a Tweet-a-Watt kit, Adafruit has also put the open source plans online for all to freely build and share, creating a network of makers watching their usage and swapping energy-saving tips."

2 All the parts are NEW or NOS not removed and cleaned second hand shite.

3 All the parts are as specified by adafruit and Roland ( I have the Roland UK's official service engineers service manual )
The transistors the caps the IC's the FET's are all as per the original 303 manual ( Except the BA662a which is replaced with BA6110 )
Please note that i use the adafruit PCB as specified this is not a modified version to make the build cheaper or quicker.
All parts are sourced as per adafruit recommended suppliers ( Mouser RS Farnell Digikey )

x0xb0x in custom aluminum case

via this auction
"Complete, hand-assembled x0xb0x in custom aluminum case. IO board has been modified from the original design to support an on/off switch mounted on the case. Does not include the required 300-500mA 9VAC power supply. Power supplies differ by country so it is not practical to supply every possible type (we suggest looking for the power supply of an old wired or wireless router--they often supply 9VAC, but be sure the current doesn't exceed 500mA).
This x0xb0x includes all rare parts (excluding BA662A). Q8, Q9, and Q10 have been selected for highest-beta value (above 300). The firmware installed on the MCU is SokkOS v1.9. If you have any questions about this build, feel free to contact us.

The original x0xb0x design is copyright (c) Limor Fried & Adafruit industries.

ABOUT THE ALUMINUM CASE
# Plenty of expansion room
# CNC drilled with hole for power switch
# Silk-screened front panel"

Custom x0xb0x bassline synthesizer

via this auction
"This x0xb0x is an analog subtractive acid bassline synthesizer designed and engineered by ladyada of Adafruit Industries. It is modeled part-for-part after the legendary Roland TB-303.

"The TB-303 (named for "Transistor Bass") was originally marketed to guitarists for bass accompaniment while practicing alone. Production lasted approximately 18 months, resulting in only 10,000 units. It was not until the mid- to late-1980s that DJs and electronic musicians in Chicago found a use for the machine in the context of the newly developing house music genre. -- From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303, retrieved 22 Aug 2009

The 303 remains to this day a popular instrument in many kinds of music from most forms of electronica to pop and alternative and many others as well as the genre it created: acid house. x0xb0x is considered by many to be the most authentic reproduction of the classic 303 sound because it contains the same analog circuits and parts as the original TB-303. The x0xb0x improves upon the 303 by being easier to use and offering a much wider range of features and capabilities.

That said, if you're viewing this auction, you probably already know about the x0xb0x and what it does so without further ado, let's discuss why you would want this x0xb0x. This particular x0x has been carefully constructed and modded by your truly, a self-professed geek with years of combined electronics training and experience using quality tools."

HOW TO - Wireless MIDI using 2 Xbees

"Overview video on using 2 Xbee modules, Adafruit adapter kits and FTDI cable to transmit MIDI wirelessly." x0xb0x
You can find more info on ladyada's Adafruit Industries Xbee here.

"Adafruit Industries looked at all the XBee adapter boards available and decided to design something better...

* Onboard 3.3V regulator to cleanly power your XBee, up to 250mA
* Level shifting circuitry means that its trivial to connect it to 5V circuitry such as an Arduino without risk of damage
* Two LEDs, one for activity (RSSI), the other for power (Associate)
* 10-pin 2mm sockets included to protect the modem and allow easy swapping, upgrading or recycling
* All the commonly used pins are brought out along the edge, making it easy to breadboard or wire up
* Specifically created for use with an FTDI cable to connect to a computer via USB. This means that you can use or upgrade the adapter with a computer simply by plugging in a cable
* For use with any XBee/Pro pin-compatible module

The kit includes a PCB and all components necessary to build the adapter, unassembled."
